Anxiety after quitting nicotine: is it normal and how long?
WithdrawalYes, it is common. The National Cancer Institute lists anxiety as one of the most common negative feelings after quitting nicotine 1 . In tobacco research it usually builds over the first three days and may last several weeks 1 . Longer term, a large review of smoking studies found that people who quit for at least six weeks had less anxiety, depression and stress than people who kept smoking 2 .
The evidence on this page comes from smoking and tobacco. We have not found equivalent research for nicotine pouches.
What can anxiety after quitting feel like?
The National Cancer Institute describes feeling tense and agitated within 24 hours of quitting, with muscle tightness that is often around the neck and shoulders 1 . Withdrawal can also bring restlessness, irritability and trouble concentrating 1 .
If you used pouches to calm down before stressful moments, those moments may feel louder at first.
Why does quitting nicotine make you anxious?
The National Cancer Institute explains that smoking cigarettes causes temporary changes in brain chemistry that can make people feel less anxious and more relaxed and alert 1 . Once you stop and your brain chemistry returns to normal, you may become more aware of stress for a while 1 .
That is why "it calms me down" can feel true while you are using, even if your overall stress is not lower. As you go longer without nicotine, you get better at handling stress, especially if you learn relaxation techniques 1 .
Does it get better?
For smoking, the evidence says yes. A Cochrane review brought together 63 studies of mental health during smoking cessation 2 . People who stopped for at least six weeks had less depression, anxiety and stress than those who continued 2 . People who stopped were not likely to experience a long-term worsening in mood 2 .
These studies were about cigarettes. Pouches deliver nicotine without smoke, so the results may not transfer exactly.
What helps while it lasts?
The National Cancer Institute suggests these steps for anxiety after quitting 1 :
- Remind yourself that it will pass with time.
- Set aside quiet time every morning and evening.
- Do a physical activity you enjoy, such as a walk.
- Cut down on caffeine from coffee, soda and tea.
- Try relaxation, such as slow breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth for ten breaths.
Smokefree.gov adds talking about how you feel with someone you trust, listening to calming music and exercising 3 .
When is it more than withdrawal?
The National Cancer Institute notes that people with a history of depression often have more severe withdrawal symptoms, including more severe depression, and may benefit from talking to a doctor about support 1 .
Talk to a doctor if anxiety is severe, getting worse, stopping you from doing everyday things, or not easing after the first few weeks. If you ever feel unsafe or have thoughts of harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line in your country straight away.
