How much does a pouch habit cost per year? Do the math

Planning

To work out what pouches cost you per year, multiply the pouches you use per day by 365, divide by the number of pouches in a can, then multiply by what you pay per can. For example, 10 pouches a day from 20-pouch cans at 5 euros a can is about 183 cans and 913 euros a year. Use your own numbers; prices vary a lot by country.

The formula

cans per year = pouches per day × 365 ÷ pouches per can
cost per year = cans per year × price per can
cost per month ≈ cost per year ÷ 12
cost per week ≈ cost per year ÷ 52

Check your can before you calculate. Pouch counts differ by brand and product, so use the number printed on yours.

Worked examples

The same math works in any currency. Replace 5 € or 8 € with what you actually pay.

Why bother working it out?

A yearly total makes the cost of a small daily habit visible. Smokefree.gov suggests adding up the money you will save and deciding what to do with it, both to stay motivated and to pass the time while a craving fades 1 . The National Cancer Institute suggests imagining, in detail, how you will spend your savings in six months 2 .

Those tips come from smoking programs, but the idea is the same for any habit you pay for every week.

Make the number concrete

A yearly total can feel abstract. Turn it into something you can picture:

  • Name a goal. A trip, a piece of gear, a course, or simply a buffer in your savings account.
  • Move the money. Some people transfer what a can would have cost into a separate account each time they would have bought one.
  • Check it on hard days. When a craving hits, look at how much you have kept so far.

How does cutting down change the number?

You do not have to quit all at once to start saving. If you go from 12 pouches a day to 8, you are already buying a third fewer cans. A gradual plan saves a little more each week as your daily allowance falls, then the full amount once you are pouch-free.

How does Uncanned track money saved?

During setup you enter what a can costs and how much you use . Uncanned then shows an estimated amount saved, based on your starting baseline and your can price . It is an estimate: it depends on logging honestly, and unlogged pouches can inflate estimates . You can also try the pouch cost calculator on this site without installing anything.

Questions

How do I work out my yearly cost?

Multiply pouches per day by 365, divide by the number of pouches in a can, then multiply by what you pay per can.

Why don't you list real prices?

Prices vary by country, shop, brand and tax, and they change often. Use the price on your own receipt for an accurate number.

Does cutting down save money even before I quit?

Yes. Every pouch you don't use is money you keep. A gradual plan saves a little more each week as your daily allowance falls.
