Always hungry after quitting nicotine? Why, and what helps

Withdrawal

Nicotine can decrease appetite, so many people feel hungrier when they stop 1 . Smokefree.gov describes increased appetite as a common withdrawal symptom that tends to last longer than others 2 . Keeping your mouth and hands busy, eating more slowly and staying active can help you handle it 2 3 .

Most of this research is about smoking. We have not found pouch-specific studies on appetite after quitting.

Why does quitting nicotine make you hungry?

Three things tend to happen at once:

  • Nicotine was dulling your appetite. MedlinePlus lists decreased appetite among nicotine's effects on the body 1 . When it is gone, normal hunger comes back.
  • Food becomes more appealing. Smokefree.gov says your senses of taste and smell improve after quitting, which makes food more enjoyable and may increase appetite 2 .
  • Your preferences shift. Studies show people want more sweet and fatty foods after quitting 2 .

The National Cancer Institute lists hunger or increased appetite among the most common nicotine withdrawal symptoms 4 .

Is it really hunger, or the habit?

A pouch gives your mouth something to do many times a day. Smokefree.gov notes that people often miss having something to do with their mouth and hands after quitting, and that snacking can feel similar to the old habit 2 . It adds that this need fades over time 2 .

People also tend to use food the way they used nicotine: to handle stress or boredom, as a reward, or to pass time 2 . Before you eat, it helps to ask which of those it is.

What actually helps?

Smokefree.gov suggests 2 :

  • Keep your mouth busy without a full snack. A toothpick, a straw, sugar-free mints, carrots or celery.
  • Eat more slowly. You are more likely to notice when you are full.
  • Eat without screens. Turning off the TV and your phone helps you notice your food.

Physical activity helps on two fronts. Smokefree.gov says exercise decreases appetite and reduces cravings, and that cravings drop during exercise and for up to 50 minutes afterwards 3 .

How worried should you be about weight?

Some people gain weight after quitting and some don't. The National Cancer Institute says that when weight gain happens after quitting tobacco it is usually modest, and that the health benefits of quitting outweigh the risks of a small amount of extra weight 4 . It also advises not letting fear of weight gain stop you from quitting 4 .

That research is about smoking. If you are worried about your weight or your eating, talk to a doctor or a dietitian. If you have a history of disordered eating, speak to a professional before you change how you eat while quitting.

How long does the extra hunger last?

There is no exact timeline. Smokefree.gov says increased appetite tends to last longer than other withdrawal symptoms 2 , and that the urge to have something in your mouth goes away over time 2 . Planning for it is more useful than waiting for it to end.
